HUNTER EDUCATION Page Updated July 18, 2010 This section of our site is dedicated to news and information about the Washington State Hunter Education program. Our first four classes for 2010 have been completed. For class pictures and information about those classes, click HERE. (We've also added some new information about what the winners of our $100 gift cards are doing with their windfalls) Our Hunter Education Classes are provided under the sponsorship of the Northwest Sportsman's Club and are held at the Greater Spokane Elks Lodge. See below for details, dates, and enrollment information. We now have access to our new field course and trap shooting venue. Thanks to the Hauser Lake Gun Club and officers Mel Westlake and Courtney Johnson we are able to provide a field course with simulated shoot/no shoot scenarios, and various obstacle crossings. We will also have a live fire session, shooting five rounds with either 20 or 12 gauge shotguns at clay targets. Our sponsoring organization, the Northwest Sportsman's Club, has purchased $100 gift cards to be awarded to one young student in each of our classes. Students 17 years and younger who participate in class discussion, have a positive attitude, and work hard toward developing the skills and knowledge to be safe, ethical hunters will be eligible. The cards are redeemable at any Wholesale Sports Outdoor Outfitters store. Rick and I previously taught with a team at the Wholesale Sports Store at Spokane Valley Mall. Click HERE to see pictures of graduating students from our 2007, 2008, and 2009 Wholesale Sports classes. Click HERE to see pictures and bios of our instructors and volunteers.
The State of Washington requires that all prospective hunters, born on or after January 1, 1972, successfully complete an approved Hunter Education course before they can purchase a hunting license. As you would expect, the demand for these classes is very high, and more instructors are always needed. Instructors are volunteers, and work under the auspices of the Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife. Even though instructors are in 'unpaid' status, they are afforded liability protection the same as regular, paid employees of the State. If you have an interest in becoming an Instructor, email Jim Parman via the above link. Even if becoming a certified instructor is not something you want to pursue at this time, additional help is always appreciated. Parents, grandparents, etc. are welcome to attend the classes and are encouraged to assist the instructors if they so desire and have pertinent knowledge and skills to contribute. Washington is reciprocal with most all other states, so that our Hunter Education cards are honored in those states, and vice versa. If you plan to hunt in another state with Hunter Education requirements, it is wise to check well ahead of time to make sure your Washington card is accepted.
