HUNTER EDUCATION

Page Updated March 9, 2010

This section of our site is dedicated to news and information about the Washington State Hunter Education program.

We are offering a new venue for Hunter Education Classes in 2010, under the sponsorship of the Northwest Sportsman's Club.  Classes will be held at the Greater Spokane Elks Lodge.  See below for details, dates, and enrollment information.

Our February/March class is completed.  For class pictures click HERE.

Our sponsoring organization, the Northwest Sportsman's Club, has purchased $100 gift cards to be awarded to one young student in each of our classes.  Students 17 years and younger who participate in class discussion, have a positive attitude, and work hard toward developing the skills and knowledge to be safe, ethical hunters will be eligible. The cards are redeemable at any Wholesale Sports Outdoor Outfitters store.

On Thursday, January 28th, representatives of NWSC met with store managers at Wholesale Sports in Spokane to obtain the gift cards.  The managers helped out by providing a discount on the cards as well as the ammunition and supplies for our classes.  Thanks, Reagan and Brian!

Class Details:  Orientation and class sessions will begin at 5:30 PM and end at 8:30 PM.  The first Tuesday of each class will be primarily an orientation day.  Students will be given agendas and expectations and requirements will be explained.

Student Manuals will be handed out along with necessary forms to be completed by students.  If a student is under the age of 18, a parent or guardian is required to be present at orientation to sign paperwork.  Students 12 years and younger must be accompanied by a parent or responsible adult during the entire class.

Class sessions and instruction resume on Tuesday, one week from the orientation session.  By this session students will be expected to have read the Student Manual and reviewed the study questions for each chapter.  It is required that all study questions be completed by the beginning of class on Friday.  Your books will be collected while you are taking the written test, and will be checked to make sure the study questions are completed.  If you need help, see an instructor before or after class.

Field Day and Live Fire sessions begin at 9:00 AM and end at approximately Noon.  Maps and directions will be provided to the field day location.  Please Note: It is imperative that students be on time each day!  Students must attend ALL scheduled hours to pass the course!

Agenda:  To see the class agenda, click HERE

Class Fees:  There is no fee for these classes.

Enrollment:  Online enrollment is now available for 2010 classes.

Some important notes about the online enrollment system:

The system is new this year.  It provides a quick, easy, way to enroll in Hunter Education classes from any computer with internet access and an email address.

The most important thing is; do not let the process intimidate you!  I know this is unnecessary advice for the young folks who grew up in the computer age, but for some of us from earlier generations, seeing something like 'username and password required' throws us into a panic.  Not to worry, just fill in the required information on the form.  If you make a mistake, the system will tell you what you did wrong and you can fix it

If you have concerns about forgetting your login information, write it down, or better yet, just print out the registration form before you hit the 'next' button.  If you lose your login information in spite of these precautions, it's still no big deal.  If you need to change something, cancel your registration, or want to move to a different class, just use the email link below to communicate directly with me.

The following links will take you directly to the registration page for each of our classes:

Important:  if you are under 18 years of age, be sure to download the parent consent form, print it, have it signed by a parent or guardian and bring it to the first evening of class.

The State of Washington requires that all prospective hunters, born on or after January 1, 1972, successfully complete an approved Hunter Education course before they can purchase a hunting license.  As you would expect, the demand for these classes is very high, and more instructors are always needed.

Instructors are volunteers, and work under the auspices of the Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife.  Even though instructors are in 'unpaid' status, they are afforded liability protection the same as regular, paid employees of the State.

If you have an interest in becoming an Instructor, email Jim Parman via the above link.

Even if becoming a certified instructor is not something you want to pursue at this time, additional help is always appreciated.  Parents, grandparents, etc. are welcome to attend the classes and are encouraged to assist the instructors if they so desire and have pertinent knowledge and skills to contribute.

Washington is reciprocal with most all other states, so that our Hunter Education cards are honored in those states, and vice versa.  If you plan to hunt in another state with Hunter Education requirements, it is wise to check well ahead of time to make sure your Washington card is accepted.
