HUNTER EDUCATION

Page Updated July 29, 2008

This section of our site is dedicated to news and information about the Washington State Hunter Education program, specifically, the classes held at Spokane Sportsman's Warehouse.

Our 2008 Hunter Education Classes at the Sportsman's Warehouse are all full.  Details and class hours are listed below for those enrollees who may want a refresher.

July 26th marked the completion of our July 2008 Sportsman's Warehouse Class.  After 5 evenings of classroom work, 'hands-on' learning to operate several types of firearms, a written test, and a 'live-fire' session at Center Target Sports, we graduated another 15 students.

 Registration:

Students may enroll for any remaining class openings at the customer service counter during regular store hours.  Sign-up cannot be done by phone; student or parent must enroll in person.  Students may enroll for any open class on the posted schedule.

The Hunter Education Team would like to thank the Sportsman’s Warehouse for providing their break room for our classes, the ammunition used during the live-fire portion of the class, and for assisting with student enrollment.  We are always looking for volunteers to help, and will be happy to assist you in becoming a certified instructor if you are interested.

Please note that the Sportsman’s Warehouse is not responsible for the class, class fees, or scheduling of classes, and may not have the answers to questions regarding the Hunter Education Classes held here. For questions or information not available at the store:

The State of Washington requires that all prospective hunters, born on or after January 1, 1972, successfully complete an approved Hunter Education course before they can purchase a hunting license.  As you would expect, the demand for these classes is very high, and more instructors are always needed.

Instructors are volunteers, and work under the auspices of the Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife.  Even though instructors are in 'unpaid' status, they are afforded liability protection the same as regular, paid employees of the State.

If you have an interest in becoming an Instructor, see any of the Instructor team before class time at the Spokane Sportsman's Warehouse.  Information and class schedules are available at the customer service counter as well.

Even if becoming a certified instructor is not something you want to pursue at this time, additional help is always appreciated.  Parents, grandparents, etc. are welcome to attend the classes and are encouraged to assist the instructors if they so desire and have pertinent knowledge and skills to contribute.

Washington is reciprocal with most all other states, so that our Hunter Education cards are honored in those states, and vice versa.  If you plan to hunt in another state with Hunter Education requirements, it is wise to check well ahead of time to make sure your Washington card is accepted.

Now it's time to meet the "CREW."

(This section is a 'work in progress.'  Additional biographical sketches will be added as the information becomes available.)

Paul Mosman

This is Officer Paul Mosman with the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife.  Paul is kind enough to provide time to our classes to explain the role of the DFW Officer and the general rules that apply to hunting in Washington State.  Prior to joining the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife in 2003, Paul was employed as a trooper with the Oregon State Police.  Paul is a graduate of Washington State University, with a degree in Forestry.  He also carries a Washington Hunter Education Card, graduating from a Spokane area class in 1987.  Paul is a United States Army veteran, serving in a Light Infantry unit.  His current assignment is Northeast Spokane County, with special assignments statewide.

Todd Cady

Gree-Tings! Hope to meet you in the future!   I'm a Husband, Teacher, and Hunting buddy for hire!  (I only charge a smile and a joke)  Besides Hunting and Teaching, I am also a ham radio operator - General Class License!  When at work I'm a computer geek...ahem, well, Help Desk Operator for computer problems.  When home I am still a computer geek, but do things that *I* want to do.  I'm also a fanatic about GPS's and Geocaching.  My lovely wife is Michele, and without her I would be not much of anything. I'm so glad she's mine!

Ed Dixon

I am a sales representative for a building materials supplier, and an active hunter.  Several years ago, a co-worker, who was a single mother, asked me to take her 9 year old son to Hunter Education classes in Missoula, MT.  While attending that class, I became interested in teaching.  Soon after a move to Spokane in 1990, I took the required training, became certified, and have been instructing ever since.

Bruce Hargrave

I have been a hunter for over 35 years, using modern firearms, muzzle loaders, and archery equipment.  I have earned certification as "Master Hunter" in the state of Washington.  After two years studying agriculture in community college, I ended up in the construction industry, and have been working construction for 30 years.  I became a certified instructor several years ago, because I wanted to pass along our hunting and shooting heritage to future generations.

Chris Herron

I’m currently working - excuse me, employed - as an aircraft fueler.  It may not sound like much but planes gotta fly – gas gotta pass.  Besides, it was there that I re-discovered my life-long and second love:  (God, Family, and Country being tied for first)  I’ve been doing my entire adult life what I wanted to do as a kid – work on and around airplanes.  That’s why I say it’s not work.

A few years ago I retired from the Air Force where, among other things, I learned to talk in front of crowds.  As a result, when I was asked to make an impromptu presentation as a student in my Hunter Education class I was quite comfortable.  That led to being invited to join the program.  Now ten years later here I am.  Where does the time go?

Jacques LaFave

I am a service manager with a water treatment company in Spokane.  I have a beautiful wife, Terri, two dogs, Tommy and Hershey.  I play softball, and love the outdoors.  I have been a duckaholic for about 21 years now, and February to October are hard for me.  Also I  like to hunt other things too. I have been a hunter education instructor for a few years now, and love the group of "guys" that I teach with.  It is almost as much fun as hunting ducks.  Hope to see all of you on the water, or in the woods some day.

Mike Murphy - Chief Instructor

Jim Parman

Most of my working life was spent as a Federal Mediator, sitting between Labor and Management as they negotiated Labor Contracts.  After retiring in early 2003, I could finally schedule my own time!  As an active hunter, shooter, and reloader, I believe strongly in the principles taught in Hunter Education so I decided to get involved.  I began assisting with this teaching team in early 2004, and became a Washington State certified instructor in September of that year.  I also do some volunteer instructing in Idaho, and have State certification there as well.
